Teacher unions walk out of negotiations with govt over COLA strike

Due to a lack of trust from the government, a collection of separate teacher unions have postponed their negotiations with the government indefinitely.

The four different unions say that the government has not acted in good faith during talks to find a solution to their strike over the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

"It simply indicates that the administration is unwilling to continue negotiations unless the teacher unions call off their strike.

"We have kept all of Organized Labor as hostages, which is a breach of faith. Because, according to our understanding, Organized Labour is persuaded that we must find a solution to the COLA issue.

"Currently, everyone is attractive. Angel Carbonou, general secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), informed the media, "We believe that we will be walking out of the conference before they do."

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), and the Teachers and Educational Workers' Union (TEWU) have declared an indefinite strike on Monday, July 4, 2022.

The teacher unions recently defied President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-call Addo's to return to the classroom.

NAGRAT's gender coordinator, Rebecca Ocran Abaidoo, told JoyNews that the organization appreciated the government's offer to the negotiating table but will not call off the strike.

She stated "We are hopeful that we will have something tangible to convey to our members in order to terminate the strike. (However, we are still on strike and have not called it off.)

"His Excellency has been heard, but we need to confer with our rank and file.
