Minority alleges that the EC intends to construct a new voter registry using the Ghana Card as the sole form of identification.

The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament is alleging the Electoral Commission wants to compile a new voters register, using the Ghana Card as the sole requirement or identification card.

It was revealed to the press on July 12th, 2022 that Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu was aware of intentions by the EC to draft a constitutional instrument in preparation for the 2024 general elections that would assemble a new register.

He said that any move to establish a new register by the EC will be resisted by his side.

Haruna Iddrisu informed the press in Parliament, "Our impression as we pick it up is that the EC is desperately planning to throw out the 2020 voter register and replace it with a new voter register, which would cost taxpayers and the people of Ghana 80 million dollars or thereabouts.

He claims that the nation is not prepared for such an exercise because of the difficulties many people have obtaining the national ID card and the associated costs of conducting a new voter registration.

He said that "such a concept must be shelved."
