Yaw Opoku Mensah, a Ministry of Education spokeswoman, has denied accusations that Ghana Police Service soldiers shot live rounds at pupils at the Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi.
Speaking to the media following the event, he stated that the Ministry has received no reports of live rounds being fired.
"There's nothing quite like a live gunshot." According to the police answer, it was the result of the students' reactions. There was no use of live ammunition. That is something I haven't seen. I wasn't briefed on any live gunshots in there."
"The kids who were taken to the hospital were only there as a consequence of their amazement at seeing so many police officers on their campus." "As a consequence, they collapsed," he informed a Joynews journalist.
After beginning on a demonstration to express their discontent with the status of the road, the kids produced heavy traffic on the stretch of road in front of their school on Monday, resulting in many pedestrian knockdowns involving instructors and students.
The police, who were called in to disperse the protesting students, resorted to shooting warning shots to disperse the protestors, despite earlier accusations that the police fired live bullets at the students.
According to Citinewsroom.com, ambulances were called to bring the injured students to the hospital.
When some parents learned of the situation, they invaded the school to ensure their children's safety.
The police have published a press release on the event, which you can read here.
