The National Cathedral – Ablakwa will be a target for prosecution under the next NDC govevernment

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for North Tongu from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a warning that there will be prosecutions on the National Cathedral in the event that their party wins the election in 2024.

He stated that a number of individuals have inquiries regarding the expenditures that the government has made on the National Cathedral.

Sir David Adjaye & Associates Limited was given a 32 million naira payment in 2021 without Parliament's permission, according to Mr Ablakwa.

All of these enormous sums of money that are being released to companies for the first time have not been approved by MPs."

During a news conference on June 2, Mr. Ablakwa remarked, "We don't even know the procurement processes that were followed for these firms and these consultants, who are now earning hundreds of millions of Ghana cedis."

According to Nana Akomea, a former NPP Communications Director, all the fuss around the National Cathedral is based on a misconception.

He said that the cathedral's construction was critical to Ghana's development because the country's Christian majority numbers at roughly 70%. He also pointed out that the Turkish government had built and funded a mosque for the Muslim community.

"Every commitment made by a politician is a personal pledge; every plan isn't it...," he was quoted as saying by her. My commitment to seeing the construction of a cathedral through to completion is very essential to me... Who is it that takes a personal pledge to construct a national structure?... If you make a promise to yourself, the thing that you are going to build is not going to be for the country.

Because over 70 percent of our people identifies as Christian, the construction of a cathedral is quite significant to us. I am overjoyed that our Muslim neighbors now have access to a mosque that is worthy of the stature of their faith...one that was constructed with the assistance of the Turkish government... Additionally, Christians will value the construction of a national cathedral because it will allow significant national events to be housed in an appropriate facility in the event that they are held in the country.

Nana Akomea, appearing on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana program, stated that "when you travel to many countries in the globe, they have this facility," despite the fact that the country is currently experiencing economic hardship. There are still people sleeping on the streets if you travel to the United States... there are still people sleeping on the streets if you go to London; they have national cathedrals for national occasions.
